The least squares estimator for the linear regression model is shown to converge to the true parameter vector either with probability one or with probability zero. In the latter case, it either converges to a point not equal to the true parameter with probability one, or it diverges with probability one. These results are shown to hold under weak conditions on the dependent random variable and regressor variables. No additional conditions are placed on the errors. The dependent and regressor variables are assumed to be weakly dependent—in particular, to be strong mixing. The regressors may be fixed or random and must exhibit a certain degree of independent variability. No further assumptions are needed. The model considered allows the number of regressors to increase without bound as the sample size increases. The proof proceeds by extending Kolmogorov's 0-1 law for independent randomvariables to strong mixing random variables.

This paper establishes consistency of least squares estimators in (i) a multiple regression model with integrated regressors and explosive, non-mixing errors, and (ii) a dynamic linear regression model with regressors and errors that may have infinite variances. In the former context, the asymptotic distribution of the least squares estimator also is obtained, in certain cases.

This paper presents conditions under which a quadratic form based on a g-inverted weighting matrix converges to a chi-square distribution as the sample size goes to infinity. Subject to fairly weak underlying conditions, a necessary and sufficient condition is given for this result. The result is of interest because it is needed to establish asymptotic significance levels and local power properties of generalized Wald tests (i.e., Wald tests with singular limiting covariance matrices). Included in this class of tests are Hausman specification tests and various goodness-of-fit tests, among others. The necessary and sufficient condition is relevant to procedures currently in the econometrics literature because it illustrates that some results stated in the literature only hold under more restrictive assumptions than those given.

Summary
Abstract: The standard approach to reporting empirical results in economics is to provide point estimates and standard errors. With this information, confidence intervals (CIs) and tests are constructed using t tests and the normal critical values. In instrumental variables (IVs) regression with weak IVs, this approach is problematic. The most widely used estimator, two-stage least squares (2SLS), has significant bias and is poorly approximated by a normal distribution when IVs are weak and the degree of endogeneity is medium to strong. In fact, when the parameter space allows for arbitrarily weak IVs the exact finite-sample level of standard CIs of the form “estimate ± std error × constant” is zero and t tests have level one.
This paper reviews recent results in the literature on weak IVs that develop an alternative approach to inference with weak IVs. With this approach, one reports point estimates accompanied by CIs or tests that have levels that are robust to the strength of the IVs. In particular, CIs are formed by inverting tests that are robust to weak IVs. That is, a CI for a parameter β, say, is the set of points β0 for which a weak IV robust test fails to reject the null hypothesis H0: β = β0. This is the same method that is used to generate a CI of the form “estimate ± std error × constant” except that the test employed is one whose level is robust to weak IVs, rather than a t test based on a normal approximation.

Summary
The chapters in this volume are dedicated to Thomas Rothenberg in honor of his retirement from the Economics Department at the University of California, Berkeley. Tom Rothenberg has made fundamental contributions to econometric theory and has been an inspiring teacher, advisor, and colleague. Rothenberg's early work focused on efficient estimation and identification in simultaneous equations models. In a paper (written with C. T. Leenders) published in Econometrica while he was still a graduate student, Rothenberg established the asymptotic efficiency of the linearized maximum likelihood estimator for simultaneous equations models and thus the asymptotic efficiency of three-stage least squares. This line of research was summarized in his monograph Efficient Estimation with A Priori Information, where he laid out a unified theory of efficient estimation in simultaneous equations systems.
Because exact optimality results for estimators and tests in simultaneous equations models are generally unavailable, the notion of efficiency in Rothenberg's initial work typically is first-order asymptotic efficiency. Often, however, there are a number of estimators that are asymptotically equivalent to first order; k-class estimators in a single equation with multiple endogenous regressors is a leading example. In finite samples, these estimators have different behavior, but their finite-sample distributions can be either unavailable or so complicated that they fail to provide useful comparisons between the estimators. Thus, Rothenberg undertook to examine the differences between first-order equivalent estimators and tests by studying their higher-order properties using Edgeworth expansions. Much of this work is summarized in his masterful chapter in the 1984 Handbook of Econometrics, which remains a key reference for researchers interested in the deviations of the distributions of instrumental variables estimators from their first-order asymptotic distributions.

This 2005 volume contains the papers presented in honor of the lifelong achievements of Thomas J. Rothenberg on the occasion of his retirement. The authors of the chapters include many of the leading econometricians of our day, and the chapters address topics of current research significance in econometric theory. The chapters cover four themes: identification and efficient estimation in econometrics, asymptotic approximations to the distributions of econometric estimators and tests, inference involving potentially nonstationary time series, such as processes that might have a unit autoregressive root, and nonparametric and semiparametric inference. Several of the chapters provide overviews and treatments of basic conceptual issues, while others advance our understanding of the properties of existing econometric procedures and/or propose others. Specific topics include identification in nonlinear models, inference with weak instruments, tests for nonstationary in time series and panel data, generalized empirical likelihood estimation, and the bootstrap.

Summary
ABSTRACT
This paper provides bounds on the errors in coverage probabilities of maximum likelihood-based, percentile-t, parametric bootstrap confidence intervals for Markov time series processes. Analogous results are given for delta method confidence intervals (which are based on first-order asymptotics). The bounds show that the parametric bootstrap for Markov time series provides higher-order improvements over delta method confidence intervals that are comparable to those obtained by the parametric and nonparametric bootstrap for i.i.d. data and are better than those obtained by the block bootstrap for time series. Additional results are given for Wald-based confidence regions.
The paper also shows that k-step parametric bootstrap confidence intervals achieve the same higher-order improvements as the standard parametric bootstrap for Markov processes. The kstep bootstrap confidence intervals are computationally attractive. They circumvent the need to compute a nonlinear optimization for each simulated bootstrap sample. The latter is necessary to implement the standard parametric bootstrap when the maximum likelihood estimator solves a nonlinear optimization problem.
INTRODUCTION
A line of research to which Tom Rothenberg has made significant contributions is that of Edgeworth expansions for parametric models. His Econometrica papers on Edgeworth expansions for estimators and tests statistics in the normal linear model, (Rothenberg 1984a,b) are paradigms of elegance. The current paper is in the same line of research, though it is not so elegant. We develop Edgeworth expansions in parametric time series models and utilize these Edgeworth expansions to explore the properties of the parametric bootstrap.
Specifically, this paper analyzes the higher-order properties of the parametric bootstrap for maximum likelihood (ML)–based confidence intervals (CIs) for kth order Markov processes, possibly with exogenous variables.

Background
Information on survival and cause of death in pre-senile dementia is scarce and the organisation of services controversial.
AimsTo study survival, place of death and death certification in pre-senile dementia.
MethodPatients aged 45–64 were identified from hospital and community sources in the Northern health region (1985–89) and classified as having pre-senile dementia of Alzheimer type (PDAT) or pre-senile vascular dementia (PVD) by applying an algorithm to case notes. Deaths were ascertained from the National Health Service Central Registry (NHSCR) to 31 December 1998. Survival analysis was performed using the SPSS/PC program, and expected survival calculated from life tables.
ResultsMedian survival time from diagnosis was 6.08 years and did not differ significantly in PDAT and PVD, or by age or gender; 19.3% of deaths occurred at home, 24.5% in nursing or residential homes and 56.3% in hospital; 72.4% of the death certificates mentioned dementia or Alzheimer's disease; 15.4% were still alive.
ConclusionsPre-senile dementia has a variable but usually chronic course, requiring appropriate planning and services.

At the Savannah River Site (SRS) we are currently finalizing the design for a multi-system vitrification process that will be installed in the F-Canyon Multi-Purpose Process Facility (MPPF), an existing highly shielded, remotely operated facility. Authorization to proceed beyond the preliminary design based on the recommendation of a Formal Design Review Board was requested in May of 1999.
The Savannah River Technology Center (SRTC) Process Development Group has been conducting research and developing a process to identify equipment design bases and process operating parameters since 1996. The goal of the project is to stabilize a tank of ∼11,000 liters of nitric acid solution containing valuable isotopes of americium (Am) and curium (Cm). Vitrification has been selected as the most attractive alternative for stabilization and provides the opportunity for recovery and eventual reuse of the actinides. The final glass form will be placed in interim storage awaiting a disposition by the Department of Energy. This paper presents a brief history of the stabilization program and an overview of the entire Am/Cm stabilization process. This paper also provides details of a specific processing issue related to drain tube pluggage (devitrification) that was encountered during the development of the baseline batch vitrification process, and the remedy employed to reduce the potential for further drain tube pluggage.
